    The Fifties!

Two words that stir a lot of memories. A few of the movies that touched me deeply on many levels are the following.

"A PLACE IN THE SUN" Elizabeth Taylor/Montgomery Clift/Shelley Winters love epic. If you saw it with a date then she probably became your wife.

"LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING" A Eurasian love story amid Korean War starring William Holden and Jennifer Jones. Music sung by "The Four Aces."

"THE COUNTRY GIRL" A story of how alcohol can ruin an acting career or marriage starring Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby and William Holden. A revival currently on Broadway.

"EAST OF EDEN" John Steinbeck's masterpiece introducing James Dean to celluloid immortality. I recognized 'myself' in the character of Cal Trask in so many ways.

Afraid they are all pretty much before my time. But I do vaguely remember watching East of Eden and Giant on TV when I was young. I think those two movies and Dean are the reasons I always fell for the bad boys.

None of them ever matched James Dean though. I'm still looking.

"GIANT" was the largest money grossing film for Warner Brothers until "SUPERMAN" in 1978.  Grace Kelly was first wanted by Director George Stevens for the Elizabeth Taylor role of Leslie Benedict but MGM would not release her from her contract for she was slated to be in "MOGAMBO" in Africa with Clark Gable and Ava Gardner.  Alan Ladd was first wanted to play Jett Rink but his wife did not want him to play the role...so the part went to Jimmy.  John Wayne and William Holden were first wanted by Warners to play Bick Benedict...but the part went to Rock Hudson.  After Jimmy was killed days before the final shooting...Nick Adams voiced over his final lines.

Edna Ferber based "GIANT" on the life story of Glenn McCarthy of Houston.
